2012 PennApic
Summer Picnic
Bring the whole family, the neighbors, or some friends, to the largest and best beekeeper picnic held in Pennsylvania.
Highlights include:
* Pig Roast, and enough great food to feed an army. Open corn boil, and the Big Green Egg will be on hand. Note: We do ask that families bring their favorite dish or sweets. Individuals who lack cooking skills, or families driving long distances, are asked to bring nonperishable items. (cookies, chips, etc.)
* Water balloon contest, with plaques going to the winner of both adult and children contests. Dawn Toutkaldjian will be defending her two-time championship title.
* The "Best Honey" Contest. Winner Jon & Kay Deardorff will try to defend their rotating trophy plaque. The winner will have their names engraved on the plaque. Bring a one pound bottle of YOUR honey and see how it stacks up against other beekeeper's honey. The 2012 winner takes the plaque home for the year.
* Honey Tasting Contest. Won last year by Grai Rice of New Paltz New York, this year the competition heats ups. See if you can tell the difference between local raw honey and commercial bought brands.
* Open Apiaries program. Working hives will be on hand for those wanting see some bees and ask questions. Bring your bee suit/jacket.
* A gold prospecting and panning demonstration with a professional. Learn how to pan, and try your luck finding some GOLD!
* Nature trails with a guided walk with naturalist Beth Kepley of Gifford Pinchot State Park.
* The presenting of the PennApic "Beekeeper of the Year" award.
* Entertainment includes live music with a Bluegrass band.
* Door prizes, raffles, and gifts for the children.
* Children's treasure hunt, water Slip & Slide, and riverside activities will keep the kids busy.
* Or just sit under a shady tree and chat about bees, perhaps make a new friend, or connect with someone from the past.
